Banks actively monitoring accounts after Target breach impacts millions

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

It started with 40 million people's credit card information stolen just before Christmas. Now, another 70 million will has been impacted.

While Target will offer a year of free credit monitoring and ID Theft Protection, banks are also actively monitoring accounts.

"What we do is look for any unusual account activity or any transactions and report those immediately," said Krisy Marshall with Wells Fargo.

Tom Gallagher with the Better Business Bureau says the most important thing you can do, if you haven't been impacted by this security breach just yet, is to actively monitor statements.

"Watch everything that goes on with your name on it, the credit card number, that debit card number, is your name. That is you," said Gallagher.

Wells Fargo has seen an increased number of people stopping by to have their account information changed. Bank officials say you may want to hold off before closing the account.

"We are not suggesting that you go proactively close your account, and this is because our Wells Fargo customers are protected by zero liability."
