GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Greenville County Sheriff's Office said they are investigating a phone scam in which the caller claims to be a deputy working with the Greenville County Sheriff's Office Warrants Division.

Master Deputy Jonathan Smith said residents have reported several incidents where they received phone calls from a man claiming to be Lt. John King with the Greenville County Sheriff's Office Warrant Division, who tells the victims that they have active warrants.

"The individual goes on to say the only way the warrant can be cleared up is for the person to purchase a Green Dot money card and provide the reference number off the back of the card to him," Smith said. "The caller attempts to have the person stay on the phone with him throughout the entire transaction."

Smith said The Greenville County Sheriff's Office does not have a Lt. John King on staff.

"Also the Sheriff's Office would like to remind everyone that we will not attempt to contact anyone by phone regarding arrest warrants," Smith said. "Further the Sheriff's Office reminds everyone to never provide your personal or financial information to anyone over the phone you do not know."

Smith said anyone who may have information regarding the suspect or these calls is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 23-CRIME.
