NEWBERRY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Officials with the Newberry County Sheriff's Office said the man accused of shooting and killing his estranged wife in December 2013 died of natural causes while being held in Newberry County Detention Center.

Deputies said Charles Butler, 76, of Chambersburg, PA, was being held on a murder charge.

Deputies said Butler shot his estranged wife Andreena Butler, 72, of U.S. 176 in Newberry, in the head. A friend found her body on Dec. 21.

The two had been married for 50 years before they separated and Charles Butler moved to Chambersburg, PA, where he was taken into custody a few days after his wife's murder, deputies said.

Deputies said Charles Butler was extradited back to Newberry County on Jan. 9, 2014.

On Saturday, deputies said Charles Butler became disoriented and became unresponsive during a video visitation.

Corrections officers said they attempted lifesaving measures until EMS arrived and pronounced Charles Butler dead at the scene.

Deputies said that Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton determined the death was the result of natural causes after his heart stopped beating.

SLED is investigating the death.
