SHELBY, NC (AP) -

The former mayor of a western Piedmont city says he's joining North Carolina's U.S. Senate race this year.

Ted Alexander of Shelby said Monday he'll run for the Republican Party's nomination in May, bringing the total seeking the GOP bid to at least six.

Alexander served eight years as Shelby mayor until 2011 and has been Cleveland County Republican Party chairman for the past year.

He told The Shelby Star he felt God was compelling him to get in the race and believes what he's learned over the years could help North Carolina and the country during a critical period.

The 53-year-old Morganton native planned a formal announcement later Monday in Shelby.

The Republican primary winner will take on Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan.
