Haywood, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Eight people have been charged after deputies said they cut telephone wires and sold the copper inside.

The Haywood County Sheriff's Office said the eight people were arrested in two different groups that were cutting the wires and selling the copper, causing $50,000 worth of damage in the process.

Deputies said the incidents occurred in late October and mid-December in the Hyder Mountain Road area and England Road.

Between Dec. 23 and Jan. 3 the sheriff's office arrested eight individuals.

They charged Kevin Gibson, Leiha Boyer, Rickey Hill, Ryan Green, Sara Kent, and Steven Allred, with larceny, possession of stolen property and injuring utility wires, according to deputies.

Clifford Lance and Gwendolyn Burnett were also arrested and charged with possession/concealing stolen property, according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office said there are more suspects in the case and additional arrests are pending.

Deputies said a break in the case came from information from the witnesses and the public.
