KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

There is an explanation as to where dead geese found in a KCK park were coming from, but the game warden says leaving them in a pile in the park is not proper or legal.

When a KCTV5 viewer came across several dead geese piled together near a trash can she became alarmed and called Wyandotte County deputies.

At least five or six geese had been gutted, their organs placed in a plastic bag.

Animal control responded to the call at Stony Point Park near North 83rd Street Monday afternoon.  It was the second call they had received about dead geese. They found more near 54th Street.

Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks game warden Glenn Cannizzaro said this could be the work of hunters.

Right now, it is goose hunting season until Feb. 9.

"They do what they call breasting out, they'll take the meat off the breast and discard the carcass. Most of the meat that's edible is from the breast," Cannizzaro said.

Cannizzaro said breasting out the geese is allowed during hunting season but leaving them this way is not.

"There's people just dumping carcasses because they are kinda lazy. They don't know what to do with them or they don't want to dispose of them properly. They just throw them in the nearest ditch, creek or whatever," Cannizzaro said.

Cannizzaro said hunters could pay a fine of up to $500 if caught dumping animal carcass in that manner.

He also said some trash companies will collect parts of wildlife, but it is up the hunters to find out where.

If you suspect illegal dumping call, you can call animal control or your local game warden.
