A 24-year-old Phoenix man is in custody in connection with the death of a man whose burned and bullet-riddled body was found last month in an outlying desert area.

On Tuesday, Donald Purcell was extradited from Bakersfield, CA, where he was arrested to the Lower Buckeye Jail in Phoenix.

Purcell was first arrested on Jan. 1 on seven counts of misconduct involving weapons. The next day, Purcell appeared in court and was released on bail.

A day later, the Maricopa County sheriff's crime lab confirmed that a weapon found in Purcell's Phoenix home was linked to the death of Abel Martinez, 24, of Phoenix, whose burned and bullet-riddled body was discovered near 355th Avenue and Mile Post 16.

When deputies returned to Purcell's home to arrest him on charges of first-degree murder, they determined that Purcell had fled to Canada on a Greyhound bus, MCSO said.

Detectives mapped the bus route and notified Bakersfield police, asking them to stop the bus. Purcell was taken into custody.

An autopsy determined that Abel died from multiple gunshots.
