A woman, accused of shoplifting, escaped from a deputy's patrol car on Wednesday night, according to Lt. Tim Ridgeway of the Greenville County Sheriff's Office.

Ridgeway said the woman was arrested and put in the patrol car after deputies said she shoplifted from Walmart. On the way to the jail, the woman started complaining that she couldn't breathe and the deputy rolled down the window, according to Ridgeway.

Ridgeway said the woman somehow slipped out of her handcuffs and then started threatening to cut herself with the handcuffs.

The deputy asked people in the area of Grove Road to call 911 for assistance, according to Ridgeway. He said EMS and other deputies responded.

The deputy was able to able to take the woman into custody and she was brought to the hospital, Ridgeway said.

Ridgeway said the woman will be charged with shoplifting, resisting arrest and escape.

The woman's name has not been released at this time.
