Avondale child wounded after gun accidentally discharges

Posted: Updated:
AVONDALE, AZ (AP/CBS5) -

A child was shot in the leg after a parent accidentally discharged a gun he was cleaning, Avondale police said.

Sgt. Brandon Busse said the 11-year-old girl was transported to Phoenix Children's Hospital from an Avondale home Thursday afternoon with no life-threatening injury.

According to a police dispatcher, the child's father was cleaning the firearm in the garage when an ammunition round became jammed.

Authorities said the gun somehow went off, sending the round through two walls before it struck the child in the leg.

Busse said police are not yet releasing any details about the father and child's identities.

It is too soon to say if the father will face any charges, Busse said.
