BREVARD, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Firefighters and emergency crews are working to clean up and remove a fuel tanker that overturned in the mountains of western North Carolina Friday morning, prompting some evacuations.

According to the Brevard Fire Department, the tanker overturned along Conestee Road between Island Ford Road and U.S. 276 south of Brevard.

Conestee Fire Rescue Chief Keith Owen said they believe the truck was headed downhill when its brakes failed, causing the truck to roll when it could not make a curve.

Owen said the truck's driver was airlifted to Mission Hospital, but his injuries were not known.

According to Owen, about 50 to 100 gallons of diesel fuel leaked but they were able to stop the leak from spreading further. He said they do not believe the amount that leaked will be a threat to groundwater, but the soil will be tested.

In the meantime, crews said it will take up to eight hours to drain the truck's fuel into another tanker before they can tow it away.

Owen said while it is a hazardous situation, they do not believe it is volatile. He said some nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution.
