Queen Creek toddler hospitalized after near drowning

QUEEN CREEK, AZ (CBS5) -

A Queen Creek toddler is recovering after nearly drowning in an unfenced, backyard pool.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said it happened around 6 p.m. Friday at a home near 184th Place and Ash Ridge Drive.

Officer Chris Hegstrom said a 13 year old was watching four siblings at the time, while their mother picked up another child from football practice.

The 15-month-old girl managed to slip out of the house and into the backyard.

Hegstrom  said a 4-year-old sibling found her in the pool and notified the 13 year old who pulled the girl from the water.

The child had a faint pulse when she was rushed to a hospital.

But, Hegstrom said she's now in stable condition at Cardon Children's Medical Center.

He said this was a close call and a reminder that pools pose a danger year-round.

"This child is very lucky to be OK," said Hegstrom. "It's probably going to be a lesson for the entire family. If you've got a pool, put a fence around it. Put alarms on your back doors - whatever it might be  - any protection that you can add, helps save lives."
