BJU instructor, philanthropist Chuck Luttrell dies

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A long-time Bob Jones University physical education instructor who started the Special Olympics program in Greenville has died, according to an obituary from Mackey Mortuary.

Originally from Greenville, TX, Charles "Chuck" Luttrell taught physical education classes at BJU for more than 40 years.

Luttrell also founded Camp Spearhead for mentally and physically challenged children, according to the obituary.

He served as camp director for more than 30 years, and during that time he started the Special Olympics program in Greenville.

Luttrell died Saturday at age 74, according to the obituary.

Visitation is scheduled for 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at The Mackey Mortuary on Century Drive.

Luttrell's funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hampton Park Baptist Church, followed by a private burial service at Graceland East Memorial Park.

Luttrell's family asks that memorials may be made to Camp Spearhead, in care of Spearhead Legacy Group, 4806 Old Spartanburg Road, Taylors, SC 29687; or to Bob Jones University, in lieu of flowers.
