PHOENIX (CBS5) -

An inmate at the Lower Buckeye Jail died Saturday morning after he was beaten and stabbed by his cellmate, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said.

John Klatt, 50, was found beaten and suffering a stab wound to the eye shortly past 7 a.m.

Klatt was stabbed with a small pencil, sheriff's investigators said.

Detention officers said they were alerted by cellmate Nike Black, 20, that Klatt was bleeding and not breathing.

Detention officers, jail medical staff and fire paramedics tried to revive Flatt. The inmate was pronounced dead in the housing unit.

Black and Klatt were minimum security inmates. Klatt was in jail since Sept. 17, 2013, on sex crimes charges involving minors and his cellmate, Black, was in jail on domestic violence charges.
