A Gaffney man has died following a single car crash Saturday, according to Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler.
Fowler identified the victim as 77-year-old Elbert Clark Koon of 942 Potter Road.
Fowler said Koon was driving a 2007 Nissan Frontier pick-up truck north on Green River Road about 6:30 p.m. when he ran off the left side of the roadway and hit a mail box, overcorrected, ran off the right side of the roadway, crossed a creek and then hit an embankment.
"Koon was trapped in the wreckage until being freed by fire and EMS personnel," Fowler said. "He was airlifted by helicopter to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center where he died at 8:14 p.m.," Fowler said. "Koon was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision and died from blunt force body trauma. He has ruled the death an accident."
Koon's death was Cherokee County's first traffic death of 2014.
