Coroner: Autopsy shows missing Westminster man was beaten to death

WESTMINSTER, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Oconee County Coroner said an autopsy confirmed the man found buried the debris of a burned down house died as a result of homicide.

Coroner Karl Addis said he performed an autopsy on Richard Marszalek on Sunday morning.

Deputies with the Oconee County Sheriff's Office said they found Marszalek, 61, dead Friday afternoon under the remains of a home on West Spearman Road in Westminster.

Addis said Marszalek died sometime between Dec. 27 and 29, 2013.

"The autopsy showed Mr. Marszalek died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head consistent with being beat by someone," Addis said. "No weapon has been identified at this time."

Deputies said a woman went to the sheriff's office this past Saturday and reported that Marszalek had been missing since Dec. 29.

Deputies said a fire destroyed the home Marszalek went missing from Jan. 4, six days after he was last seen.

"His body was found in an area of the home where there was no direct fire damage; his body did not sustain any thermal injuries," Addis said.

After the remains were discovered Friday, deputies said they charged Joshua Michael Fulbright, 28, and Patrick Grant Covone, both of Westminster, with murder in the case.

Fulbright was arrested Jan. 12 on multiple drug charges and faced a judge Friday afternoon for the murder charge and four other charges from another incident in September 2013.

Covone was arrested and served with a murder warrant Friday night. He faced a judge on Saturday.

Both suspects are being held in the Oconee County Detention Center.
