SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Thursday, Alonzo Thompson was sworn in as the new police chief for the city of Spartanburg at City Hall.

Thompson was formerly the assistant chief for the Winston-Salem Police Department.

"I am very excited about joining the team in Spartanburg," Thompson said. "As I went through this process and learned more about Spartanburg, what really impressed me the most was the level of cooperation between the city's corporate and nonprofit partners and the community at large."

Thompson has almost 30 years of police experience since starting his career in Winston-Salem in 1984, according to a release from the city of Spartanburg. They also said Thompson served in the U.S. Air Force prior to his police career.
