GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The conductor of the world-famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir was in Greenville Thursday, coaching the Furman Singers in preparation for a special church music concert to be held Friday.

"It's always gratifying when other people want to do one's music," said Mack Wilberg, who flew to Greenville from Salt Lake City for Furman's annual church music conference.

The conductor has arranged dozens of American and folk hymns for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, adding something new and fresh to each well known tune. His most famous arrangements may be "Come, Thou Fount of Ev'ry Blessing," and "Battle Hymn of the Republic."

"I've been singing Mack Wilberg's pieces ever since high school and in church choir," said Furman student Corey Hart. "But this is the first time I've ever had the chance to work with him one on one."

Wilberg will direct the Furman singers and other local church choirs, including that of Greenville's First Baptist Church, at a "Festival of Sacred Choral Music." The concert will be held Friday, Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Greenville. Admission is free.

Wilberg said music is something that "unites us all," and although people from various denominations will be singing together, Furman students said Wilberg's selections of sacred hymns transcend religious differences.

"I always think that we come into this world with the ability to enjoy many things," said Wilberg, "but one thing that we all seem to have in common is how music, sound, can affect our lives."
