HENDERSONVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Henderson County deputies said the Violent Crimes Unit and the Department of Social Services charged Robert Jacob Patterson, 19, of Hendersonville, with felony child abuse charges.

Deputies said Patterson was watching his 3-month-old child while the mother was at work when the child was injured.

Patterson lived with the infant's mother and was engaged to be married at the time of the incident, deputies said.

Deputies said a child specialist at Mission Hospital in Asheville told them the child's injuries had an obvious indication of child abuse.

The child suffered a fractured skull and extensive bruising to the face and head but is expected to recover, deputies said.

Patterson was arrested Friday and is being held in the Henderson County Detention Facility under a $40,000 bond with his first appearance scheduled for Monday morning, deputies said.
