Police: Man accused of shooting at officers during chase was wanted in Spartanburg

SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A man police said shot at them during a chase over the weekend was also wanted by Spartanburg police for another incident, officers confirmed to FOX Carolina.

Spartanburg police said 30-year-old Denis Kearney was wanted in Spartanburg after they said he shoplifted from a Walmart and then pepper sprayed two loss prevention officers before fleeing the scene.

According to incident reports provided by Spartanburg Public Safety, on Jan. 1 Kearney took various items from the Dorman Center Walmart and concealed them in his pockets and in plastic bags.

The report stated that when loss prevention tried to stop him from leaving the store he pulled out a flashlight and pepper spray, and proceeded to spray the two officers.

On Saturday, Greer police said Kearney shot at officers during a car chase was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals Saturday afternoon.

Kearney is charged with attempted murder, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a weapon by a felon, failure to stop for police, and discharging a weapon at an occupied vehicle, in connection with the chase and shooting on Saturday, according to Pressley.
