GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Crews with the South Carolina Department of Transportation were busy Monday preparing roads for icy and snowy weather, expected to hit Tuesday.

"It's hard to fathom that 2 inches of snow are gonna stick to the pavement, but we're taking preventive measures to make sure that doesn't happen," said Jason Allison, SCDOT District 3 maintenance director.

The drop in temperatures has ACE Hardware on Woodruff Road in Greenville preparing for a jump in sales. The store has sleds out for all the South Carolina kids who rarely see snow.

"People start rushing in here and we try to keep up," said Jeffrey Knight, a manager at Ace Hardware.

"We've got just some basic pipe insulation we've been selling to keep your pipes from freezing," he said.

SCDOT crews prepared roads south of Interstate 85 all the way down through Laurens County and the Midlands and Lowcountry, both areas that will see the most snowfall, according to forecast models.

"We've done some initial pre-treatments for I-85 and some of our major routes south of 85," said Allison.

"A lot of our preparation is making sure all of our equipment is up and ready to go, whether we need to use it here or in the lower part of the state all that will be ready," he said.
