Snow Likely Tuesday, Mainly South of 85

Posted: Updated:

What a tricky forecast this has been!  We are tracking a system that will have a VERY sharp dividing line between heavy snow and NADA!  It's looking like that barrier will set up somewhere between Columbia and Greenville.  That's why I'm calling for 2-4" of snow near Greenwood and Abbeville, while the 85 corridor will see much less.  If there is a shift of just 30 miles in the heaviest moisture, this could all change.  But, my confidence is getting higher and higher as our computer models are starting to show some agreement on the strength and timing of this system.

So, here's a timeline.

9AM Tuesday: Light snow in the mountains, nothing but perhaps a few flurries in the Upstate.

Noon Tuesday: Light snow will quickly rush into the Upstate.

3pm Tuesday: Snow will pick up in intensity south of I85.  This is when accumulations will get going.  A dusting will be possible along I85, while southern Upstate could see an inch on the ground very quickly by late afternoon.

6pm Tuesday: the snow will be concentrated south of 85, with some lingering light snow showers near Greenville and Spartanburg.

9pm Tuesday: The snow will START to push south and wind down for our southern counties.

Midnight Tuesday: most of the snow will be gone.

Slippery roads could be an issue all over the Upstate and northeast GA, but the bulls eye for road problems will be from Elberton to Abbeville to Laurens.

Temperatures will remain below freezing through much of this event, so wherever it snows heavily, expect some icy patches to develop.

Hope you all stay safe and can enjoy some flying flakes for first time since November for many of us.  Last time we had accumulating snow at GSP was Feb 16, 2013 (at my baby shower LOL!).
