GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

With parts of the Upstate forecast to see a few inches of snow Tuesday, local Department of Transportation road crews are getting the roads ready for the winter weather.

Salt truck crews are preparing to protect the roads as best as possible as the forecast looms for the evening commute in the southern Upstate.

SCDOT employees work 12-hour shifts, using pre-emptive ice treatments, snow plowing and spreading salt and other materials improve road conditions in advance and during snowfall across the state.

And crews have already begun pre-treating some of the major roadways, including Interstate 85 and the major roads south of the interstate. Not all roads have been salted yet, as crews plan to work on that in Greenville County and other areas throughout the day Tuesday.

SCDOT officials are advising drivers that if they choose to be out on the roads later in the day, to drive with caution.

FOX Carolina Chief Meteorologist Kendra Kent said the flurries will start to fall about noon and fall heaviest in the afternoon south of I-85. Read more about her forecast here.
