GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

With the approaching snow and ice headed for the Upstate, the American Red Cross is reminding residents to take several precautions amidst the winter weather.

The cold, snowy weather could prompt power outages. And with frigid temperatures and icy roads, drivers may encounter other hazards. The Red Cross as a list of "BeRedCrossReady" tips to prepare everyone for the winter weather event.

  • People are encouraged to minimize travel. And if travel is necessary, people are urged to keep a disaster supplies kit in their vehicle.
  • Winterize cars and keep the gas tank full. A full tank helps prevent the fuel line from freezing.
  • Have food and water supplies on hand. Keep at least a 3-day supply of water on hand (one gallon per person per day) and at least a 3-day supply of nonperishable, easy-to-prepare foods on hand.
  • Create an emergency kit with a flashlight, battery-powered or hand-crank radio along with extra batteries, first aid kit, a 7-day supply of needed medications and  other medical items (hearing aids with extra batteries, glasses, contact lenses, syringes, cane).

Listen to a NOAA Weather Radio or local news channels for critical information from the National Weather Service (NWS). FOX Carolina will bring you the latest weather updates on-air, online at www.foxcarolina.com, on Facebook and on our mobile app.
