Dozens of SC National Guard activated as part of state of emergency

COLUMBIA, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The frigid temps and winter weather forecast for large parts of South Carolina has prompted Gov. Nikki Haley to declare a State of Emergency.

The South Carolina Emergency Management Division and members of the State Emergency Response Team have activated the South Carolina Emergency Operations Center at Operation Condition 3.

OpCon 3 is the state's level when a disaster or emergency situation is likely

According to Emergency Management, the S.C. National Guard has soldiers standing by to assist first responders and state agencies if additional support is needed. Additionally, The S.C. Department of Social Services staff, American Red Cross and Salvation Army volunteers are standing by to operate shelters if necessary.

The SEOC will remain activated for the duration of this event.

According to SCEMD, 32 guardsmen are on active duty for the state to operate vehicle recovery missions, help ongoing traffic response activities and provide transportation support for first responders.

They are also reporting more than 1,240 traffic incidents statewide nearly 1,400 maintenance employees out working to treat roads.
