GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

If the accidents in the Upstate were an indication, South Carolinians are just not used to driving in icy conditions.

"We have a tendency to panic," said driving instructor and Mauldin police officer Sgt. Jason Peterson.

He teaches driving at 911 Driving School.

"The knee-jerk reaction is to slam on the brakes and that's the last thing that you want to do," he said.

Peterson worked many accidents in the Upstate Tuesday night, saying the common denominator was overuse of the brakes when people would slide on ice.

"Saw a lot of people jamming on the brakes then they panic and try to overcorrect and oversteer during a skid," he said.

Peterson said it is simple advice that could save your life.
