UNION, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Union man is accused of hitting a woman then striking her brother with a machete who was defending her, according to police.

Police said Thomas Hopkins, 56, was accused of jumping on and hitting a woman he lives with in the face, injuring her on Wednesday.

When the woman's brother came over to check on her, Hopkins became upset because the two men did not get along, police said. According to the police report, Hopkins told the man to leave then he pulled out his machete and hit the man across his chest.

The victim told police that Hopkins then ran outside, waving the machete around and yelling, police said.

According to the police report, the man only had a mark on his shirt and was not injured by the machete attack. Police said the woman was injured.

Hopkins was arrested and charged with criminal domestic violence and assault and battery first-degree.
