GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A run created in memory of a fallen Upstate soldier continues to grow and provide funds for local veterans groups.

The fourth annual "A hero's 5K" event was held at Furman University in Greenville on Saturday.

A Hero's 5K was founded to raise awareness of the sacrifices made each day by the United States military personnel and to raise money to support the needs of South Carolina servicemen and women and their families, organizers said.

Debbie Whitsitt said her friends helped her organize the event to help her cope with the loss of her son, SPC. Geoffrey Whitsitt, who was killed in combat in Afghanistan when he was only 21 years old.

Organizers said all proceeds from the race will go to Upstate Warriors Solution and Patriot Rovers.

Upstate Warriors Solution is an Upstate group that works to connect veterans and their families to the resources they need while re-adapting to civilian life, organizers said.

Patriot Rovers trains and provides psychiatric service dogs and other services to veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain Injuries as a result of their military service.
