WELLFORD, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Spartanburg deputies said a man is facing a weapons charge after he accidentally shot his friend Saturday evening.

It happened at 211 Half Moon Road in Wellford. Deputies said John Philip Thompson, 39, is facing an unlawful possession of a firearm charge because he is a convicted felon.

Investigators said Thompson eventually admitted to them that he was playing with his .40 cal firearm when it went off, accidentally shooting his friend, 33-year-old Michael Burdette, in the head.

Deputies said Burdette has been taken to Spartanburg Regional Hospital with a gunshot to the head. Deputies believe that the bullet grazed Burdette's head. They said that he was conscious when he was taken to the hospital.

FOX Carolina spoke to one of his friends Saturday night, who said she's in shock this happened.

"Be careful who you hang around with and what your surroundings are at all times. You never know. Hold those people that are close to you dear," said Jamie Floyd.

Thompson is being held on $5,000 bond at the county detention center.
