PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -
Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio is dispatching a female chain gang to pick up trash on city streets Super Bowl Sunday.
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said 15 women will be tasked with cleaning state trust land near the intersection of Scottsdale Road and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard in north Scottsdale. That's where the Waste Management Phoenix Open will be in its last day.
Arpaio said between the Super Bowl and the Phoenix Waste Management Open golf tournament, he expects more people will be consuming more alcohol.
Clad in a pink T-shirt with DUI chain gang embossed on it along with black and white striped uniform pants, an inmate will also be holding a large pink arrow that the sheriff had them make that reads, "Party Too Hardy and You End Up Here."
Arpaio is calling the group a DUI chain gang and says they will remind the public the consequences of drinking and driving.
Arpaio said he sends out the Chain Gang on Super Bowl Sundays because research indicates that drunken driving arrests are as prevalent on Super Bowl Sundays as they are on New Year's Eve, New Year's Day and the Fourth of July celebrations.
The women who are on the chain gang have been convicted of various crimes.
Arpaio said inmates volunteer to be part of the gang.
He started the nation's first and only female chain gang in the mid 1990s. Like the male chain, the women perform thousands of hours of community service over the course of a year.
