TOWNVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Townville man has been charged after investigators said he attempted to strangle a woman he lived with and then sexually assaulted her.

Stephen Lee Witherington, 35, has been charged with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature in connection with the incident that happened at his Coneross Creek Road home on Friday, according to the Oconee County Sheriff's Office.

According to the sheriff's office, they were called to the home for a reported sexual assault of a woman in the morning hours.

According to investigators, Witherington placed his hands around the woman's throat, cutting off her airflow.

The woman escaped but Witherington then held her to the bed by her throat and sexually assaulted her, investigators said.
