GAFFNEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A Gaffney man was sentenced to 10 years for the sexual assault of a child after it was reported to a school guidance counselor in 2012, solicitor Barry Barnette announced on Monday.

Juan Carlos Ortiz, 38, pleaded guilty to second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor on Monday at a hearing in the Cherokee County Courthouse.

On May 3, 2012, the victim reported the crime to a guidance counselor at Gaffney High who immediately referred the matter to the Gaffney Police Department.

Ortiz originally denied doing anything wrong to police and denied a polygraph test.

"I'm thankful the case was resolved without the victim having to testify at trial," assistant solicitor Matt Kendall said. "I hope he can rest easier knowing the defendant is out of his life for a while."

Ortiz will serve eight years before he is eligible for release, and then he will be added to the sex offender registry.

The solicitor said Ortiz will most likely be deported when he is released.
