EASLEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Easley family's sense of security is shaken after they woke up Monday morning to find that their 9-year-old's four wheeler was stolen from where it had been chained to their house.

Kayla Porter said her son, Eddie, became heartbroken when he found out that his favorite Christmas present was gone.

It happened on Ashmore Lane in Easley. Porter said they had the ATV locked up to the front porch, just feet away from where they slept inside when it was taken sometime overnight.

The Upstate mother said her family feels violated and they've scrounged together $500 to offer as a reward to anyone who can help them find it.

"I had to sit down and explain to him… that it was no longer here," Porter explained through tears. "And the more he cried, the more disappointed he got, the more my heart broke."

The Anderson County Sheriff's Office is investigating. A neighbor told them that they saw a red or burgundy small truck near the home around 4:30 a.m. on Monday.

Deputies said that robberies like this can be hard to prevent, but there are important steps that people can take before anything is stolen from them.

Investigators encourage people to make lists of valuables, with record of vin numbers, model numbers, and photos. This will be helpful, they explain, in case something is stolen. Having details pre-recorded will make it easier for investigators to search for their stolen items.

Homeowners in Anderson County can contact Lloyd Robison with Sheriff Department Community Services to schedule an appointment for a deputy to walk through their home for a  home security survey.

Officers can help people determine the best places and ways to keep valuables, and teach people things like how to secure vehicles and where to add more lighting around the house.

Robbers look for easy jobs, according to Lt. Sheila Cole with the Anderson County Sheriff's Office. She said that Robison can help people make their homes less of a target for robbers looking for a quick steal.

If someone has information about where Eddie's four-wheeler is, they're asked to notify the sheriff's office.
