WARE SHOALS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Eleven people have been charged after a bench-clearing brawl at an Upstate high school basketball game.

According to one police report, it was reported that a player from Tamassee-Salem High School used a racial slur while shaking hands at the end of the game against Ware Shoals High.

A Ware Shoals player then threw the first punch, and a brawl broke out on the floor, clearing the stands, police said. People were taken to the ground in the fight, including a couple of Ware Shoals police officers.

Those officers and several other people were injured in the brawl.

According to another incident report, one officer was elbowed in the face and kicked while he was on the ground after trying to stop people from climbing a fire escape to get to the team's locker room.

The officer said he had cleared everyone from Ware Shoals' side out of the gym when he heard a woman was attempting to climb the fire escape stairs. The officer said the woman had previously refused to leave the gym.

The officer was able to move the woman away from the stairs, but when he tried to stop another man from climbing the stairs, he slipped and was kicked in the knee, the report said.

According to police, 11 people have been charged, including four juveniles, six adults and one person that hasn't been identified yet after police reviewed footage of the fight.

In a statement, Tamassee-Salem coach and athletic director Ed Fry disagreed and said it wasn't a racial slur that caused the first punch.

"There was no racial slur used in the shaking of hands line which led to the incident," Fry said. "This information was backed by the WSH principal and athletic director, as well as information from the principal of Tammassee-Salem Middle School, Steve M.R. Moore, after players from both schools were interviewed."

Both schools met with the South Carolina High School league Monday, and a ruling is expected Tuesday afternoon. We're told it's likely several students will be suspended.

According to Skip Lantz with the South Carolina High School League, the minimum suspension for fighting is two games. He said the schools and the league are cooperating in the ongoing investigation.

Tamassee-Salem Principal Steven Moore said four players from his school will be suspended for Tuesday's game.
