GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The American Red Cross said they have been called to more than 30 disasters in a week and are in desperate need of volunteers to help those dealing with loss.

According to the local spokesperson for the Red Cross, the unusually cold weather has increased demand for disaster services, especially those related to residential fires.

In the past week, area volunteers have responded to 33 disasters affecting 70 adults and 42 children in the western Carolinas.

Volunteers assist families amidst a disaster, like a destructive house fire. People wanting to volunteer can attend an upcoming training orientation. All of the sessions are scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Red Cross community offices:

  • Thursday Feb. 6: 115 Whitehall Rd. in Anderson
  • Thursday Feb. 13: 940 Grove Rd. in Greenville
  • Wednesday Feb. 19: 100 Edgewood Rd. in Asheville
  • Thursday March 6: 224 East Main St. in Walhalla
  • Tuesday March 11: 131 East Main St. in Spartanburg
  • Thursday March 20: 940 Grove Rd. in Greenville

For more information, interested volunteers can email wcrdvmt@redcross.org, or call 864-607-3201 or 828-258-3888, extension 228.
