ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A 22-year-old Midlands man was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Tuesday in the beating death of an Anderson woman in 2011, Anderson County Solicitor Chrissy Adams announced.

Charlie Gene Wood, of Pelion, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the death of 42-year-old Renee Charping, who was found dead near her car on Little Mountain Road on Dec. 6, 2011.

Charping's 7-month-old son was found unharmed in the backseat of the car by two bystanders.

Witnesses said Charping met Wood when she was looking to buy meth and the two drove off in the car together, with the baby in the back seat, according to Adams.

The two then went to buy pseudoephedrine, an over-the-counter medicine used in the manufacturing in meth, where they were seen on surveillance video.

Other witnesses said Wood was acting strangely after the incident occurred, and even made "an admission of sorts regarding having killed Charping," Adams said.

When being questioned about the incident, Wood told officers that Charping was setting him up and pulled at gun on him and tried to rob him. The solicitor said he also told officers he blacked out and didn't know what had happened.

Wood's fingerprint was located in the victim's blood on a window of the car and his jacket with his ID in it was also located at the crime scene.

The autopsy showed Charping died of massive blunt force trauma from multiple blows to the head, Adams said.
