Police are investigating a string of robberies in the northwest Valley, and while they are reluctant to call it a ring, they said some may be connected.
"We'd heard there were other things going on in the area already," said an employee of Setterberg Jewelers who asked that we call her Jewel. "Forty-five years in the business and we've never had anything like that here."
Jewel was working at the Sun City store in December when some guys broke into their showcase.
"Before we knew it a big boulder went straight through the window," she said.
The men quickly grabbed jewelry and ran off, but weeks later, they were hit again. This time, it was much more harrowing.
"The gun was already at my head, they told me to get down, don't touch anything," Jewel said. She said they crashed the cases with a hammer, stuffed the merchandise into a red bag, and took off. Luckily, no one was hurt.
"My thinking was any moment the gun was going to go off," Jewel said.
They're not the only targets lately. Wallick Jewelers was robbed on Christmas Day and again on Dec. 29; both were 'crash and grab' robberies in the middle of the night when no one was there.
Then, on Jan. 14 at V Jewelers, several men showed up to rob the store at gunpoint, but ran off when the owner flashed his own gun. Police said they are also to blame for a Peoria pharmacy robbery that happened around the same time.
While investigators are reluctant to call this a ring, they do tell us some could be connected.
"I want them caught and I want them to know Sun City's not easy 'pickins' like they seem to think it is," Jewel said.
Many of these stores have increased their levels of security. If you know anything about these crimes, call police.
