Phoenix council approves extra vacation time

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A judge recently ruled Phoenix police officers cannot use city-paid work time for union activities, but on Wednesday, the Phoenix city council found a way around it.

The city council voted 6-3 to give thousands of city employees extra vacation time, which they can donate to their union members to work on their behalf.

Union members CBS 5 News spoke to believe they're caught in the middle of a political game.

"It's (a) really sad day in Phoenix when police officers are used as public pawns," said Joe Clure, president of the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association said.

Councilman Sal DiCiccio released the following statement:

"This is money laundering. The judge's order was very clear and this new arrangement shows the power unions hold at City Hall. The unions get politicians elected then the politicians give more money and power to the unions. It's a continuous circle that leaves the public left holding the bag."
