PHOENIX (CBS5) -
An argument early Wednesday morning between two large groups left a 19-year-old Phoenix man dead and police searching for answers.
The fight broke out between people who were at a party at one of the condominium units and people from an apartment across the street in the area of 28th Drive and Cactus Road about 2 a.m., said Phoenix police Officer James Holmes.
The fight moved into the middle of the street.
"We have no indication that this is gang-related," Holmes said. "We have no indications that these two groups of people knew each other prior to 2 o'clock this morning."
Witnesses said the victim was "jumped and beaten" by the group of people and he was injured in the fight, Holmes said early on in the investigation. The victim collapsed when the fight was over and he was assisted to a condominium by friends after the fight ended. It was at that point that the Phoenix Fire Department was called.
Holmes said information developed through their investigation led police to believe the 19-year-old victim may have been the aggressor in the scuffle but was never struck by anyone.
Police now believe he died from a medical condition.
"The subsequent investigation by Phoenix police detectives reveals the victim had been involved in an altercation with one male while in the roadway and statements indicate the victim may have been the aggressor and was never struck by anyone during the altercation," Holmes said in a statement Wednesday afternoon.
The initial hospital examination also showed no injury to support the victim had been jumped and beaten, Holmes said.
Neighbors said they are not surprised by what happened.
"I've been here three years and it's getting to the point that you know you don't come out here at night," said neighbor Bob Frailey. "Your door is always locked."
An autopsy has been scheduled. The victim's identity was being withheld, but Holmes said he lived in another area of Phoenix.
Phoenix police detectives are still seeking information regarding witnesses and persons of interest from the apartment complex at 11459 N. 28th Dr.
