(RNN) – Athletes and journalists pouring into Sochi, Russia for the Winter Olympics are using social media to show the host city's lack of preparedness.

In the past few days, multiple media personnel have detailed hotel rooms not ready for their arrival, rooms unfinished and in disrepair and unusable water. According to a Washington Post story, "only six of nine media hotels are ready for guests."

CNN sports producer Harry Reekie has been one of the media members who has live-tweeted his Sochi experience since he arrived in the host city Sunday. The problems have spawned the Twitter #SochiProblems and the spoof Twitter account @SochiProblems.

BuzzFeed reported in November 2013 that a Winter Olympics official told sports journalists that reporters using any type of social media would be "considered a serious violation and lead to their accreditation being canceled." It was also reported that those caught using social media would be banned from reporting on the games.

The outrage spread quickly, and forced Olympic officials to clarify their stance on social media use. The International Olympic Committee's media guidelines website did so, stating "the IOC actively encourages and supports athletes and other accredited persons at the Olympic Games to take part in social media and to post, blog and tweet their experiences."

The committee went on to say the experiences "must respect the Olympic Charter" and be within the guidelines of other specific social media requirements listed in the rules, which stipulated what constituted "accredited media."

So far, the "accredited media" and the athletes inside the Olympic Village are using social media not to show the beauty of the seaside mountain resort town, but its crumbling facilities with the games just two days away.
