COWPENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Fire Chief Tim Jones with the Converse Fire Department said the coroner was called to the smoking remains of a textile warehouse after a man's body was found inside.

Jones said he also called in arson investigators from the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office and SLED after crews put out a structure fire inside the Grant's Textile Inc. building.

Jones said firefighters were called to the building at 4911 South Main St. in Cowpens around 5 a.m. Saturday morning.

Jones said once firefighters entered the building after they'd extinguished the flames, they found a man's body on the left side of the building.

"The fire started on the right side of the building," Jones said. "The fire did not directly reach the victim."

Coroner Rusty Clevenger said Jeffrey Todd Epps, 49, of East Main Street Ext. in Spartanburg was pronounced dead at the scene.

Clevenger said autopsy and toxicology results are pending.

Jones said the source of the fire remains under investigation.

"Witnesses said the fire broke out on the right side of the building and spread very fast," Jones said. "When the first trucks arrived, flames had already destroyed half of the roof."

The building was a total loss, Jones said.
