Investigators search for cause of massive blaze at ports

Posted: Updated:

Crews are keeping a close eye on the warehouse that went up in flames on Saturday.

Investigators hope to quickly figure out what started the massive blaze.

Firefighters were out at the Georgia Ports all day on Sunday monitoring hot spots and beginning their investigation into the cause of the massive fire that destroyed half of the 200,000 square-foot building at Ocean Terminal.

It started around 11 a.m. Saturday, and tore through half of the building. A thick dark plume of smoke filled the sky, visible for hours and for miles. Luckily no one was injured and the fire did not spread to any of the other buildings in the area.

Nearly half of the more than 5,000 tons of bulk rubber that was stored inside of the warehouse burned. The good thing, no injuries were reported, including at a nearby construction site where worker are building a new housing complex for SCAD.

The investigation into the massive fire continues, and fire investigators say they'll be out at the ports for the next couple of days.

We will continue to follow this developing story. Count on WTOC news to bring the latest on the investigation into the cause as soon as it becomes available.
