CAMILLA, GA (WALB) -

The second largest solar power plant in the state has opened up in Mitchell County.

Tuesday, the Economic Development Authority held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the 20 MegaWatt Camilla Power Plant. The $30 Million project spans 150 acres with 67,000 solar panels.

Planners said the state of the art technology will generate enough electricity to power 5,000 homes on sunny days.

"Actually, South Georgia is a good location for solar energy. The efficiency ratio is much higher here than in North Georgia. The sun shines longer on average per day here," said Joe Bostick, Mitchell County EDA Chairman.

Bostick said the county has been working with Georgia Power since they developed their Advanced Solar Initiative program on 2011.

He said 168 companies competed for contracts the county's economic board secured. "Well, it's not gonna create a lot of permanent jobs, but what it does do is create a lot of tax property. It increases our tax digest in a small rural county. That's an important aspect to this," he said.

He estimates the renewable energy plant will generate around $300,000 every year in school and ad valorem taxes.
