Verizon: talk, text, tips on winter weather

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE COUNTY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

With winter weather threatening, Verizon Wireless shared some important tips and precautions when it comes to cell phones and staying safe.

The cell phone carrier said not to leave wireless devices in cars or places exposed to the cold.  Low temperatures drain the batteries and make screens more fragile.

Verizon also recommended keeping cell phones, tablets, hotspots, netbooks and laptops fully charged in case of power outages. Have additional charged batteries and car-charger adapters on hand for back-up power as well, the company said.

According to Verizon, text messages should be brief and voice calls should be limited to emergency situations to conserve battery power, and to free up wireless networks for emergency operations.

The carrier also suggested downloading mobile apps from local media outlets and emergency agencies like the Red Cross and FEMA to track weather conditions, and to access important information.
