The winter storm that is pounding South Carolina has now left about 225,000 electric customers in the dark statewide. And that number is expected to climb as icing continues and winds pick up causing branches to break and snap power lines.

Mike Quinn, a spokesman for the Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, says that about 104,000 customers of the state's cooperatives have lost power. Many of those are in Berkeley County northwest of Charleston. Quinn says some folks are comparing the downed tree limbs to the landscape after Hurricane Hugo smashed into the state almost 25 years ago.

The county is largely rural and he says restoring power will pose a challenge.

South Carolina Electric & Gas reports that about 95,000 of its customers have lost power.
