LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Since a driver's decisions on the roads have to be made in a heartbeat, authorities in the Las Vegas area are using the day before Valentine's Day to demonstrate that importance in a special enforcement.

On Thursday, law enforcement officers will be walking across marked crosswalks near area schools dressed as giant red hearts.

While the costume may be bright and silly, authorities are using the tactic in the hopes they grab the attention of drivers traveling through these roadways.

Organizers of the event called "Have a Heart…Stop for Pedestrians" want to remind drivers and pedestrians that both play vital role in arriving home safe. They cited statistics from last year which showed 53 pedestrians were killed in crashes in Clark County.

Motorists failing to stop at crosswalks while a pedestrian is crossing will be pulled over and cited. Organizers also say pedestrians who fail to utilize crosswalks properly will be cited as well.

Officers from Clark County School District, Las Vegas Metro and North Las Vegas police departments are slated to take part in the day-long enforcement event beginning at 7:30 a.m.
