LAURENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Laurens County coroner is investigating a fatal crash along U.S. 221 involving a school bus and motorcycle.

Coroner Nick Nichols said he was called to the crash that happened about 6:45 a.m. at 221 South at New Prospect Church Road.

Lance Cpl. Tony Keller with the Highway Patrol said their reconstruction team is still investigating the fatal accident.

FOX Carolina spoke with Mr. George Ward with Laurens County School District 55 who said the crash involved a special needs school bus but all the students on board were safe. He said the bus had four students onboard headed to a few different schools when the crash happened.

Troopers said the motorcyclist was a 50-year-old from Laurens and she was not wearing a helmet.

The coroner identified her as Marsha Gillespie and said she was on her way to work in Greenwood at the time of the crash. He said she was a nuclear technician at Piedmont Health Group.

The motorcyclist was headed south on 221 when the bike collided with the bus, which was headed north and turning left onto New Prospect Church Road, according to troopers.

The school bus had four students on board who were between 5 and 20 years old along with the 72-year-old driver, troopers said.

FOX Carolina's crew at the scene said 221 and New Prospect Church roads was blocked to through traffic while troopers reconstructed the crash.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is also investigating the crash.
