ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Upstate rescue group is trying to find the owner of a pony that was found wandering alone in the woods in Anderson County.

Palmetto Equine Awareness and Rescue League said the horse was found hungry with matted hair walking in the Fants Grove woods near T. Ed Garrison Arena.

"Obviously, this horse has not been taken care of properly," said Nicole Walukewicz. "His coat hasn't been brushed out. His mane and tail, as you can see, is severely matted and so we don't really know what his story is behind his lack of care. It could be a myriad of things."

Walukewicz said the pony is doing much better, and the veterinarian said he will recover, but he did have some issues, including worms. She said they have already cleaned up his hair and begun treatment.

The rescue group is asking anyone who may know where the horse is from or to whom it belongs to come forward so they can go through the process with the county of placing the pony in the best care. Walukewicz said the pony belonged to someone at some point, and they want to make sure he continues to do well.

Once the group knows where the horse came from, they said the formal steps can be taken to place the horse with a rescue group or new home if needed.

She said anyone with information can leave an anonymous tip if they want.

If you recognize the pony, you can reach PEARL at 864-287-9939, on Facebook or email info@pearlsc.org.
