BRIDGEPORT, CT (WFSB) -

A post about a dog in Bridgeport went viral this week after some folks thought the pet might have been abused.

However, the Bridgeport Police Department said that's not the case and the pet's owner has not violated any laws.

A Facebook user created a page called "Help save the dog in Bridgeport" on Tuesday. It has since accumulated more than 1,550 supporters.

The page claimed the dog, which is named Bobby, was sad and lonely living in a box outside in the cold on Frenchtown Road.

"I don't want to judge anybody but it breaks my heart," said Elizabeth Raver, who found out about the dog through her sister, an animal activist. "It maybe not being treated as well as they could be."

Police posted on their own Facebook page Tuesday night that they received a number of inquiries about the dog.

"Based on complaints, our animal control officers have visited the house at least 10 times over the last two weeks," officers wrote. "They have conducted thorough inspections and documented the site on video."

Investigators said they found that the dog actually has an enclosure with two sections. One is a concrete slab that the dog can walk around in while the other is a shelter with heat, hay, food and water.

"We understand this is a topic people feel very passionate about and people will have their opinions, we came to the scene, we looked at the shelter the animal lives in, checked the animal out, spoke with the owner and there's no sign of abuse or neglect," police said.

They also said animal control officers gave the dog a checkup and found the animal to be in good health.

"At this time, however, the owner is not violating any law in the care of his dog," the post said.

Photos of the backyard kennel for Bobby were posted to the Bridgeport police Facebook.

Some people are still upset about the dog's living conditions posting on Facebook.

"This situation is disgusting! How can animal control come out and say what he's living in is OK," one poster stated.

"Animals have rights. Dogs are family," another post read. "You don't put family in a cage in the cold, that's sick and beyond sad."

Police say that they will continue to monitor the situation, including doing more unscheduled visits to the home.

Eyewitness News did talk to neighbors who say they never saw any issues. One neighbor, who did not speak English, told Eyewitness News about one concern she had.

"She's just saying the guy is nice," said Sonia Yujcre, who was interpreting for the neighbor. "But one time she went over to ask if she could walk the dog and he was like 'no.'"

Eyewitness News was unable to connect the owner of Bobby.
