Spurrier: Clowney's work ethic 'OK', but not like others on team

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier appeared on the NFL Network Wednesday morning to answer questions about former defensive end Jadeveon Clowney's work ethic.

In short, Spurrier said his Clowney had an "OK" and "pretty good" work ethic when compared to some his contemporaries.

"His work habits are pretty good, they're not quite like [Marcus] Lattimore, maybe Stephon Gilmore, Melvin Ingram, or some of those guys, but when the ball in snapped, he's got something that nobody else has," said Spurrier.

Clowney has been dogged with questions about his work ethic since his production fell in the 2013 season. The star defensive end even raised eyebrows when he made a game-time decision to sit out the Kentucky game to nurse injuries.

But despite that, Spurrier defended his defensive end, saying that teams were more prepared for the speedy bruiser.

"Even though his production this year wasn't near what it was last year, he had two to three guys waiting on him just about every play. His run defense was very good, though," said Spurrier. "He chased down a bunch of guys and made tackles and his sacks, he had to go around two and three guys just about every game."

Clowney will travel to Indianapolis this week for the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine where he's expected to take part in team interviews and controlled exercises.

In an interview with Chris Mannix on The Dan Patrick Show just two weeks ago, Clowney said he was hoping to be picked first by the Houston Texans in the 2014 NFL Draft.

NFL Draft analysts and experts have projected Clowney to be selected anywhere between the first and fourth picks in the May draft.
