CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
Two people are facing charges after a shootout with a local deputy touched off a massive manhunt Wednesday on the Montgomery-Stewart county line.
Sheriff's officials are still searching for 22-year-old Jacob Roy Hammond.
Many residents in the Woodlawn area say they are keeping their doors locked, because authorities have issued a warning that Hammond is considered armed and dangerous.
"I have guns in the house, and I'm not afraid to use them," said neighbor Imogene Outland.
Outland said she's taking every precaution.
"I wouldn't want to kill anybody, but I won't let them come in on me if I can stop them," she said.
Since the violent afternoon that put an investigator's life in danger near her home, Outland said she hasn't felt safe.
"I just keep my doors locked. I have an alarm system," she said. "I figure, if they open the door, the alarm will go off. And that will give me some protection."
Montgomery County sheriff's officials said they came to investigate a meth complaint about 1 p.m. near Jim Ledford Road when a vehicle sped away, crashing through fences leading into a field.
The driver and passenger then allegedly fled the vehicle, and the female, whom investigators have identified as Jessica Hutchinson, was soon located by a K-9 team.
Hutchinson was arrested on drug-related charges.
A Montgomery County investigator driving to the scene noticed a Toyota pickup truck with two occupants leaving the area near Jim Ledford Road and tried to stop the vehicle. Police say Hammond pointed a semi-automatic pistol out the window and fired multiple shots at the officer's vehicle before getting away.
The officer was not injured by the gunshots.
The black Toyota pickup truck has been found and investigators discovered it had been listed as stolen in Stewart County a few days earlier.
Warrants have been issued for Hammond on charges of attempted criminal homicide, felony evading and theft of property.
Hammond may be traveling with 29-year-old Amber Nicole Lehman.
Both Hammond and Lehman are considered to be armed and dangerous. Anyone who encounters them is asked to call 911.
Officials have asked anyone with information to call the sheriff's office at 931-648-0611, ext. 13404 or Crime Stoppers at 931-645-8477.
